Arguably the most famous cocktail bitters on the planet, Angostura is said to have been created in the 1820s by a German doctor, a soldier in Simón Bolívar's army. The name, which later became the company's name, actually has nothing to do with the Angostura bark (which is used as an ingredient in many other bitters), but simply comes from the name of a Bolivian city. Originally created as a medicine to treat various ailments, Angostura has long been better known as an essential ingredient in a wide variety of cocktails.
